OPEN AIR MARKET
Located in Quincy, a neighborhood south of Boston, the open air market is a protest against the traditional grocery store. Incorporating community and providing an atmosphere of growth for the residents of Quincy was the goal for this design project. The driving factor for the design were making sure that all existing greenery would remain. With a conservation parti, the form that followed was a triangular edged canopy to protect the public space underneath. This canopy defines where a farmers market sets up while simultaneously shielding the lot from natural elements. Three permanent enclosed structures rest on the site in the rear: public restrooms, a small food prep space, and a performance space. These three supplemental elements are strategically placed to pull the residence of Quincy into the square to build relationships with their kin when the farmers market is not set up. With this installment, the residents of Quincy have a public meeting space to rebuild a community.
